An Evening with the Lacks Family: Behind The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
February 23 @ 18:00 - 19:00 CST
Holocaust Museum Houston (https://hmh.org/) and the Houston Museum of Natural Science (http://www.hmns.org/) co-present a moderated discussion with Holocaust Museum Houston Director of Education, Wendy Warren, Henrietta Lacks’ family members David Lacks, Jr. and Victoria Baptiste. They will share what it meant to find out—decades after the fact—that Henrietta’s cells were being used in laboratories around the world, bought and sold by the billions. Now virtually immortal, her cells have been cultured and have rendered valuable medical research for decades.
This was the subject of the renowned book “The Immortal Life of
Henrietta Lacks,” by Rebecca Skloot, which examines issues of medical ethics, civil rights, and Henrietta’s contribution to science. The book was adapted into an award-winning film for HBO starring Oprah Winfrey.
