BCRI Honors Dr. Angela Y. Davis
June 19, 2020 @ 19:00 - 20:00 CDT
The Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award is the highest award given by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, that honors outstanding individuals for their significant contributions to civil and human rights. Through her activism and scholarship over many decades, Davis has been deeply involved in movements for social justice around the world. Her work as an educator – both at the university level and in the larger public sphere – has always emphasized the importance of building communities united in the struggle for economic, racial and gender justice.
Davis will be interviewed by Professor D. Wendy Greene. The daughter of American civil rights activists, Professor Greene is a history-making legal scholar and advocate who specializes in anti-discrimination law as well as comparative slavery and race relations law in the Americas and Caribbean. The first African American woman tenured law professor at Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Professor Greene is the founder of a global awareness campaign—#FreetheHair—a product of her groundbreaking scholarly activism combating racial discrimination that African descendants systematically endure on the basis of their natural hair texture and styles.
