June 19, 2020 @ 16:00 - 17:00 CDT

Tulsa, Juneteeth, & the Importance of Black Stories – Joining the M4BL National Call to Action

The Movement for Black Lives is planning a national call to action to coincide with Juneteenth/Emancipation Day in the U.S. This is also the day that the #45 was planning on hosting a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the site of the burning of Black Wall Street. Beyond Resilience will join the national call to action with a panel of Black filmmakers highlighting the history of Tulsa, Juneteeth, and the importance of Black stories. More information coming soon.

About the Series

From the beginning of artistic practice, documentation and cinema have been used by filmmakers, in partnership with their communities, to weather periods of deep crisis. Through colonization, genocide, mass censorship, political upheaval, recession, warfare and disease, the work of film has been to bear witness, seek justice, survive and ultimately find strength and expression through the collective.

Since the pandemic came to a head, Firelight has been doing extensive outreach in their creative community through surveys and virtual focus groups to evaluate how filmmakers of color can move forward in a more and more unstable economic industry. These ongoing conversations have been so constructive that the Firelight team wanted to broaden the dialogue to engage even more diverse perspectives through an ongoing curated content series.
