(CS)2AI ONLINE: Power Grid Attack Detection & Response in a Blackstart Scenario

January 28, 2021 @ 12:00 - 13:30 CST

Most of us never have to deal with power outages as more than a minor and brief inconvenience. At the other end of the spectrum, research scientist Tim Yardley faced the nightmare scenario of having to restore power to an electric grid from a blackstart situation while it was still under attack. Join us to learn more about what he and his team learned in this exciting experience!

Certificates for PDU/CEU credit will be available to attendees.

Tim led a team in the DARPA Rapid Attack, Detection, Isolation, and Characterization Systems (RADICS) program responsible for conceiving, designing, and implementing an advanced cyber-physical range for the safe investigation of the outer limits on attack and response for the electric power grid. The basis of these in-field exercises was to advance the state of art and determine the effectiveness of different approaches on attack detection and response in a blackstart restoration under cyber attack. This talk will cover the program, what was undertaken, and some lessons learned along the way.

Tim Yardley is a Principal Research Scientist and Associate Director at the Information Trust Institute (ITI). His primary duties focus on defining the strategic vision and direction for fundamental and applied research in emerging technology throughout the ITI portfolio. Mr. Yardley works in various research areas and also acts as the industry lead in structuring research partnerships with ITI. His research is focused on trustworthiness and resiliency, particularly with regards to cybersecurity in critical infrastructure such as the electric power grid. Mr. Yardley is the Principal Investigator in a wide variety of projects, totaling over $40M in cutting-edge research. The DARPA RADICS program funds one of Mr. Yardley’s core thrusts, focusing on enabling the verification and validation of mission-critical cybersecurity tools in the electric power grid via testbed technology. Overall, Mr. Yardley’s work is focused on advancing the state of cyber security protection and mitigation methods such that they provide actionable intelligence and guidance on what to do with the information.
