Today’s CTE offerings go far beyond the vocational training of previous decades and have expanded to instruction in a wide range of high-wage, high-skill occupations. In Texas, students are able to choose focus areas across 14 career clusters ranging from business, marketing, and finance to health science and information technology. The flexibility and breadth of CTE offerings provide students the opportunity to get a head start in a variety of careers, those that may require four-year college degrees and those that don’t.
HERC will discuss its recent study looking at the relationship between CTE participation and postsecondary outcomes, including degree and certification attainment, employment, and earnings in Houston-area school districts. Group discussions will focus on what opportunities and partnerships can be created to ensure the skills students are learning in high school align with the needs of the Houston economy and translate to long-term postsecondary success.
This event is geared toward school districts, college and career readiness leaders, organizations supporting workforce development, colleges/universities/training programs, and members of the business community with a vested interest in strengthening the Houston workforce pipeline.
