Europa Clipper: Mission to an Ocean World

January 28 @ 19:30 - 20:30 CST

As part of its 2020-2021 Cosmic Explorations series, “To the Moon, Asteroids and Beyond: The Coming Decade of Solar System Exploration,” the Lunar and Planetary Society (https://www.lpi.usra.edu/) presents Rachel Klima, Ph.D.

Klima will describe the first mission dedicated to study an ocean world beyond Earth. The Europa Clipper spacecraft will launch in 2024 to study Jupiter’s moon Europa, which may be the best place in our solar system to look for life beyond Earth.

Klima is the Director of the Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium and a senior staff scientist in the Planetary Exploration Group at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Dr. Klima analyzes the infrared reflection of rocks and minerals to increase our understanding of the Moon, planets, and other objects in our solar system. Dr. Klima has been involved with numerous missions to bodies throughout the solar system, including the Europa Clipper.
