Next Economy Conversations: Jay-Ann Gilfoy of VCIB

February 25 @ 12:00 - 13:00 CST

Meet Jay-Ann Gilfoy, CEO of Vancity Community Investment Bank (VCIB): a values-driven bank on a mission to finance a sustainable tomorrow.

As we look to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that now, more than ever, we cannot go back to the way things were. From the climate crisis to deep social inequalities, the challenges of our time require us to build the Next Economy – one that is sustainable, equitable, and prosperous for all.

Next Economy Conversations, the Centre for Social Innovation‘s monthly event series, is your chance to hear from incredible leaders helping to build this Next Economy. Learn about their work as well as their personal journeys, learnings, and visions for the future.

On Thursday February 25, Tonya Surman will sit down with Jay-Ann Gilfoy, CEO of Vancity Community Investment Bank (VCIB), to explore how innovations in social finance are unlocking clean energy solutions, affordable housing, and community ownership.

Tonya will dig into VCIB’s approach to building the Next Economy by seeking both financial and community impact returns. They’ll discuss how banks can “get to yes” and resource those projects that may not, at first, make purely financial sense. And just what is the difference between community finance, impact investing and social finance anyway? We’ll learn how VCIB is using social finance to serve community, instead of the other way around.

A visionary leader with more than 20 years experience as a senior executive, Jay Ann is focused on bringing to life VCIB’s bold vision of financing a sustainable tomorrow and unique model of partnering exclusively with organizations driving positive social and environmental change in their communities. Under Jay Ann’s tenure, VCIB has honed its purpose while expanding its scope and capacity to drive results in the critical areas of affordability and clean energy, starting in Ontario. Among her achievements is leading VCIB to become the first bank in Canada to acquire an impact investment firm: CoPower, a leading provider of clean energy financing and investments.

Prior to her appointment as CEO of VCIB in 2018, Jay Ann served in senior leadership positions at Vancity, most recently as Senior Vice-President of Digital Solutions and Business Technology. She also provided strategic oversight to digital literacy, core technology infrastructure, technology solutions, digital products and fin-tech partnerships. Her previous roles include Chief Human Resources Officer and Chief Transformation Officer at Coast Capital Savings, as well as VP of Human Resources at the BC Lottery Corporation.

About our host, Tonya Surman

Tonya Surman is fuelled by her belief in the power of collaboration and belonging. She knows that putting the right people in a room is only the first step in creating real change. You also need to build a culture where everyone knows that they have value and a voice to radically redesign our futures. She did this with the Centre for Social Innovation, which re-invented the workplace by collecting social purpose organizations under one roof. And it’s what she is doing with CSI’s affiliate charity, the Centre for Social Innovation Institute and Social Innovation Canada,  unlocking the social innovation community to get at the root causes of problems. She knows building relationships between people is the foundation for a better world. It’s also a heck of a lot of fun!
