About the Event:

With the digitization of everything from electronic health records to genes and microbiomes, clinicians and researchers are leveraging AI to transform data into actionable knowledge.

In the first part of the talk, Dr. Liaw will present the case for encouraging fellow family medicine physicians to actively engage in the development and evolution of AI to open new horizons that make AI more effective, equitable and pervasive.

Next, Dr. Kakadiaris will present the newly formed Gulf Coast Consortia cluster on AI in Healthcare which includes about 100 faculty from all seven consortia institutions.

Dr. Liaw will also present a call for funding research focused on AI Programs on surveillance, prevention and resilience during pandemics.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Ioannis Kakadiaris is a Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor of Computer Science at the University of Houston, and he has a joint appointment at the Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences at the UH College of Medicine. Ioannis has a long and distinguished track record of research in artificial intelligence. He currently serves as the Chair of the GCC Cluster on “AI in Healthcare” and he is the co-founder of the Pumps and Pipes initiative which examines the cross -domain innovation in the domains of medicine, oil industry and aerospace.

Dr. Winston Liaw is a family physician and Chair of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences at the University of Houston, College of Medicine. His research focuses on the primary care workforce, access, practice transformation, the integration of public health and primary care and health informatics. Previously, he was the Medical Director at the Robert Graham Center, a primary care policy research institute. Dr. Liaw completed a BA degree from Rice University, an MD from Baylor College of Medicine, an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health, and family medicine residency training from Virginia Commonwealth University.
