Skeleton in Science’s Closet: The Scandal of Eugenics

February 10 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am CST

FREE EVENT: The “Church & Society (http://www.saintphilip.net/Church_andSociety.html)” speaker series at St. Philip Presbyterian Church in the Galleria area will feature Bruce Yeager, author of “Wrestling Brothers: Rethinking Religion-Science Relationships (https://bruceyaeger.blogspot.com/),” in a two-part series on Feb. 3 and 10, 2019.

Description: ““DNA.” “Human genome.” “Genetic engineering.” These words are frequently on the lips of geneticists today. But there is one word they will rarely utter—“eugenics” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics). That is because the eugenics movement in the first part of the 20th Century—heralded as a scientific solution to the world’s ills—turned out to be so embarrassing that today most science books don’t mention it. And history books cover up the details. However, at the time, the eugenics movement spanned the globe and permeated all areas of life. This pair of classes will explain how and why the eugenics movement happened, and raise some thought-provoking questions about the role of science today.”

Bruce Yaeger (http://wisdominleaves.blogspot.com/p/my-passion-although-i-have-taught.html) has been a teacher and lecturer for thirty years, having taught at diverse churches and the Foundation for Contemporary Theology. He also is the author of the blog “Wisdom in Leaves (http://wisdominleaves.blogspot.com/).”

The “Church & Society” speaker series is a partnership with the Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance (https://boniuk.rice.edu/home.html) at Rice University.

NOTE: This is a lecture, NOT a debate over science vs. religion, although civil questioning will be entertained. Attendees from Houston Science Enthusiasts will be guests of the church, and should act accordingly.
