Building Safe, Healthy & Empowered Communities

Building Safe, Healthy & Empowered Communities

The second of four #CrossBorderConvos explores the role of institutions & advocacy in building safe, healthy & empowered communities.

Cross-Border Conversations on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a series of virtual dialogues that showcase strategies and stories from the frontlines of SDG action – in Canada and the United States.

On October 13, the series returns for a discussion with Camden, NJ’s police chief on how his city overhauled and rebuilt its police department in 2013. We’ll hear from him and local leaders about the role of institutions and advocacy in building community trust and safety, and invite questions and insights from participants about what safe, healthy, and empowered communities mean to them.

Speakers:

Why this conversation? Systemic racism, violence, and over-policing are longstanding challenges in communities across Canada and the United States, brought into focus most recently by the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Aubrey, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, and many others. The death of Abdirahman Abdi in Ottawa has reverberated throughout the city since 2016, and people are reexamining the relationship between institutions and communities, including the delivery of police and mental health services.

What can you expect? Through lightning talks and breakout discussions, we aim to create a brave space for honest dialogue among participants and panelists about what it takes to build safe, healthy, and empowered communities. While we won’t be able to address the full complexity of these issues in 90 minutes, our hope is to bring together a range of perspectives so that we may learn from what’s worked, what hasn’t, and continue to chart a way forward together.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

SDG Goal 1 is Eliminating Poverty. From the UN, “The decline of global extreme poverty continues, but has slowed…. People who continue to live in extreme poverty face deep, entrenched deprivation often exacerbated by violent conflicts and vulnerability to disasters. Strong social protection systems and government spending on key services often help those left behind get back on their feet and escape poverty, but these services need to be brought to scale.”

How to network digitally and land a job in the post-COVID-19 economy

COVID-19 has changed the way we work, and consequently, the way we network.

In Germany, the number of people out of work has risen by 40,000 month-on-month since March, according to the BA federal labour agency.

Whether you’re looking for new career opportunities or job hunting for the first time, it’s an intimidating scenario.

As Europe and other parts of the world reopen, it’s time to get out there and network – oh, wait! Is it safe? There are a lot of question marks over the game of networking, especially right now. Introducing yourself: yes. Shaking hands: definitely not!

We’ve always heard a lot that people are afraid of networking, even before COVID-19 complicated matters further. The little voices inside our heads tell us:

  • “I don’t have the skills to network.”
  • “I’m not ‘there’ yet.”
  • “It will be embarrassing because [fill in the blank].”

The good news is: you are not alone! The Tribe for Career Happiness has your back.

Join us at our virtual event to connect your head to your mind and find out how you can network authentically and efficiently – whatever the situation.

In the session we will:

  • Network with each other using an agile approach
  • Examine our own existing networks: who is already there?
  • Make networking feel less ‘awkward’
  • Work on our empathy and create win-win scenarios
  • Learn to position ourselves to connect to new opportunities online.

Are you ready to take this networking challenge and land yourself a job in the post-COVID-19 economy?

Sign up now to go on this journey together!

This event is brought to you by the Career Happiness Tribe at Impact Hub Berlin – where change goes to work.
