Purpose has become a popular buzzword for businesses and individuals alike. And, for good reason. For people, purpose has the power to motivate, propel, and inform impact.

For businesses, purpose ensures a social mission that drives teams to do good. A recent study from Mckinsey & Company further explores purpose in the context of a crisis.

Purpose can be so powerful, and we have to acknowledge that there is an element of privilege that we need to address when we talk about purpose.

There’s privilege in wealth and income which allows people to pursue their purpose. There’s privilege for identities which have historically had greater access to purpose-driven work. Post-traumatic events, our brains go into flight or fight mode and people tend to lose a sense of purpose. All of this defines who has access.

The leading social impact organizations in New York City, Impact Hub New York Metropolitan Area and Be Social Change, are partnering to bring together an expert panel to unpack this conversation, exploring:

  • How privilege and purpose have been intertwined historically
  • Best practices to address privilege in purposeful work
  • Ways of promoting access and equity to purpose-driven work
  • Innovative ideas in ensuring greater access to individual and organizational purpose

With an incredible panel of experts, attendees will examine this topic and work toward greater inclusivity in impact, and intentional business practices. Join us to learn more about purpose and how individuals and businesses can pursue purpose while addressing inequality.

Root & Leaf Marketing Workshop

Root & Leaf Marketing Workshop

Putting Marketing Into Action with a Startup Marketing Plan

Startup marketing can feel overwhelming. However, a well-thought-out and appropriately scoped marketing plan will greatly impact your success. In this session two startup marketing veterans will show you how to create that marketing plan while ensuring that it fits the goals of your business and your available resources. Topics covered will include website optimization and how to prioritize marketing channels.

Dan LaBelle has been leading marketing initiatives for companies of all sizes for over 20 years. Earlier in his career Dan founded a successful marketing agency that served clients such as Southern California Edison, University of Irvine, and others. Most recently he spent several years in the Bay Area and Seattle mastering the complexity of marketing Software-as-a-Solution (SaaS) software while building several high functioning multi-member marketing teams from scratch. When not geeking out over marketing metrics, Dan can be found going for walks with his wife Cindy, playing far too many video games or adding another model to his much too large Lego collection.

Sam Engel has been building brands and marketing programs for more than a decade, both in-house and as an agency partner. Sam’s career spans brands large and small, including the National MS Society and Pinchot University (now merged with Presidio Graduate School), the top US graduate school in sustainability. In his spare time, Sam enjoys outdoor adventures, running with his dog Freya, and tabletop gaming.

Policies for a Circular Economy

Policies for a Circular Economy

Are we on track for a system change in Switzerland?

A successful transition from a linear into a circular economy requires solid political framework conditions and public understanding of the benefits that circularity can bring to society not only from an environmental, but also from an economic and social point of view.

Where do we stand in Switzerland? Which best-practices from abroad could inspire our transition to a circular economy? What policies and norms should be adopted to further reduce our dependence on finite resources and keep natural resources and materials we use at their highest value within the economic circle?

Unpack Impact 2020

Unpack Impact 2020

Fundraising can be one of the most challenging activities for an entrepreneur. Hear about the do’s and don’ts during Unpack Impact!

According to a recent report by TechLeap.nl, in the past ten years, barely 5.7 percent of all investments in Dutch startups went to companies with a female co-founder. This huge disparity translates into investment amounts, where startups founded by men received an average of 5.6 million euros in 2018, compared to 1 million euros going to those with female founders. While providing female entrepreneurs with fairer opportunities and access to funding is integral to an equal and just market, mixed teams also perform better. International studies show that startups that embrace diversity are more versatile and resilient. What’s more, investing in female-led endeavours has double impact: more opportunities provided for entrepreneurs means more social impact!

Keynote

Our special keynote speaker is Hedda Pahlson-Moller, founder and CEO of TIIME.org. Hedda is a private investor, independent director, adjunct professor, and advisor on issues related to impact finance, sustainability and diversity management.

Hedda is an active board member on funds and organisations working with and towards triple bottom line and positive societal impact. Her focus is on inclusion, gender-lens investing and climate change financing.

Cases

Mariah Mansvelt Beck, co-founder of YONI, discusses her experiences with investment and investors. It’s been quite a ride already and a lot of lessons learned, to share with entrepreneurs and investors alike.

Followed by a conversation with Bertrand van Leersum, investment manager at Borksi Fund, which invests in female entrepreneurs. The major banks of the Netherlands are the current investors in the fund, and they are looking for more investors, such as family offices.

Program

14:45 Virtual walk-in
